Mayank Chakraborty hails from Guwahati
Guwahati, November 25(Hani Jain): – In a landmark achievement for Indian chess, Mayank Chakraborty, a 14-year-old chess prodigy from Guwahati, Assam, has become the second International Master (IM) from Northeast India.
This significant milestone was announced by ChessBase India in a recent tweet, celebrating Mayank’s triumph in the World Youth Championships 2023.
Mayank defeated Aron Pasti (with an Elo rating of 2397) in the 9th round of the World Youth Championships 2023 under-18 category. This victory was crucial as it enabled Mayank to cross the Elo threshold of 2400, officially making him an International Master (IM).
This achievement is particularly noteworthy as Mayank becomes only the second player from Northeast India to earn the IM title, following Shahil Dey.

Journey to International Master
Mayank’s path to becoming an International Master was marked by several notable achievements. His first IM norm was achieved at the 2nd Maharashtra GM Open 2023 in Nagpur, where his performance was also strong enough to earn him his maiden Grandmaster (GM) norm.
He then secured his second IM norm at the Issykkul Open 2023, with the final IM norm coming from his performance at the Qatar Masters 2023.
