Maligaon (Guwahati), March 31: The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has rolled out an advanced Optical Fibre Cable (OFC)-based integrated communication system at level crossing gates to enhance safety and operational efficiency across its network, a press release said on Tuesday.
According to the official press release, the new Integrated Voice-cum-Data Communication System is being implemented at 50 level crossing (LC) gates using Indian Railways’ OFC infrastructure, enabling seamless and uninterrupted communication between station masters and gate operators.
The system has already been commissioned at Senchoa and Barpathar stations, covering both non-interlocked and interlocked gates.
With this upgrade, station masters can monitor the real-time status of gates, including opening and closing, directly from their control rooms, thereby improving coordination and oversight.
Meanwhile, equipped with high-quality voice communication, voice logging, an IP-based public address system and CCTV integration, the system allows both audio and visual monitoring of LC gates.
It also features single-touch calling, group communication and battery health monitoring to support efficient operations.
A key highlight of the system is its AI-enabled noise filtering at the master console, which further eliminates background disturbances such as train horns and station announcements during critical communication.
Additionally, it supports centralised monitoring of CCTV cameras and facilitates public announcements through IP-based PA units installed at gate locations.
According to Kapinjal Kishore Sharma, the initiative reflects NFR’s commitment to leveraging modern technology to strengthen safety measures, improve communication and ensure efficient railway operations, particularly at vulnerable level crossing points.
