Guwahati, March 27: The final list of contestants for the 2026 Assam Legislative Assembly elections has been released, with 722 candidates set to enter the fray after the completion of the withdrawal process, a press release said on Friday.
As per the release issued by the Office of the Chief Electoral Officer, Assam, a total of 815 candidates had initially submitted 1,389 nomination papers across the state’s 126 constituencies.
Following scrutiny, 789 candidates were found eligible to contest. However, 67 candidates withdrew their nominations on the final day, bringing down the total to 722.
The election will now witness these candidates competing for seats in the 126-member Assembly, setting the stage for multi-cornered contests in several constituencies.
Notably, women constitute only around 8 per cent of the total candidates. Out of 722 contestants, 663 are men and 59 are women, while there are no candidates in the ‘third gender’ category, the release stated.
The data also shows that independent candidates account for more than 250 contestants, reflecting significant participation outside major political parties.
Meanwhile, both the Congress.and the BJP have fielded over 90 candidates each, indicating a direct contest between the two parties in many seats.
Polling for the Assam Legislative Assembly elections is scheduled to be held in a single phase on April 9.
