Renowned Assamese poet Sananta Tanty passed away on Thursday morning in New Delhi. He was under treatment at Apollo Hospital in the national capital.
The 69-year-old singer was suffering from a prolonged illness for a long and was undergoing treatment in Delhi.
In 2018, Tanty was awarded with the Sahitya Akademi Award.
Born to an Oria family in Kalibari Tea Estate of Karimganj in Assam, Tanty became an eminent Assamese poet whose contribution to Assamese literature is very much prominent. Interestingly, Tanty completed his secondary education in a Bengali-medium school but continued his literary works in Assamese language.
Tanty has received numerous awards and distinctions for his work. He had also won the 2018 Sahitya Akademi Award for “Kailoir Dinto Amar Hobo” (Tomorrow Will be Ours), a collection of his poems.
It is learnt that the family of Sananta Tanty was facing financial difficulties during his treatment.
As the family is not being able to clear the expenses, Tanty’s body still remains at the morgue of AIIMS.
