Vijay Diwas marked at Assam State War Memorial; Veer Naris honoured in Guwahati

Guwahati, Dec 16: The 54th anniversary of Vijay Diwas was observed at the Assam State War Memorial at Dighali Pukhuri here on Tuesday, with veterans, NCC cadets and schoolchildren paying tribute to soldiers who fought in the 1971 Indo-Pak war.

The programme was held under the aegis of the Directorate of Sainik Welfare, Assam, with Lt Gen Pranab Kumar Bharali, VSM (Retd) attending as the chief guest.

1971 war veterans Maj Gen Purnananda Das (Retd), Brig Abani Kumar Pait (Retd), Col Robin Das (Retd) and Maj Biren Borgohain (Retd) addressed the gathering, recalling their experiences from the war. The veterans were felicitated with a “Phoolam Gamocha”.

Brig Ajit Kumar Bora, VSM, Group Commander, NCC Group Headquarters Guwahati, was also present.

Wreaths were laid at the memorial on behalf of the Governor of Assam and the Chief Minister of Assam, the organisers said.

Alongside the Vijay Diwas observance, the Directorate organised “Amar Swaheed Shraddhanjali”, during which two Veer Naris—Smt Akan Boro and Smt Bishnu Prova Chtri—were felicitated in recognition of the sacrifice of their husbands, Hav Ramdhan Boro (Sena Medal) and Subedar Tilak Bahadur Chetri, who were killed in action while battling militants in Jammu and Kashmir.

The two widows laid wreaths at the memorial and were presented pencil sketches of their husbands’ photographs, along with written narratives of their heroism, the release said.
