Meghalaya Gets its First Local Woman Chief Secretary

NEWS DESK: Today marks a significant day for Meghalaya.

This is the first time that a woman from the state itself has been appointed as the Chief Secretary of the state.

Today, Rebecca Vanessa Chuchiang, a member of the Khasi community, took over as Chief Secretary of Meghalaya

Churching is an officer of the 1969 batch of Indian Administrative Service (Assam-Meghalaya Cadre).

Earlier, PP Trivedi was the first woman Chief Secretary of Meghalaya in the late ’70s.

Prior to this appointment, Chuchiang provided services in the Department of Housing, Finance and Personnel in Meghalaya.

After receiving the appointment  Rebecca Venecha Chuchiang said, “I hope my career will inspire talented young men and women.”  Chuchiang hopes that this achievement will inspire young people in particular.

 “Climbing a mountain is not difficult,” she said, referring to the women’s community in Meghalaya.

Taking responsibility, the IAS officer urges his colleagues to act impartially with a sense of empathy towards the people.

Rebecca Chuchiang’s appointment is seen as an important step towards women’s empowerment in Meghalaya.
