Tura, March 31: Meghalaya BJP VP Bernard N Marak has appealed to the Governor of Meghalaya C. H. Vijayashankar to place the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council under the Governor’s direct control during its six-month extended term, instead of allowing the existing Executive Committee to continue.
Speaking to the media after meeting the Governor on Monday, Marak expressed appreciation for the swift approval of the Bill mandating Scheduled Tribe certificates for GHADC election candidates.
He, however, stressed the need for early elections following a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls across Garo Hills.
Raising concerns over a sharp rise in voter numbers, particularly in plain areas, Marak claimed that electoral rolls in some constituencies have nearly doubled over the past five years.
He also asserted that while genuine residents would not face any issues, cases of migration and duplicate voting must be carefully examined.
With the council’s term set to end on April 18, Marak argued that placing the GHADC under the Governor’s administration would ensure faster and more impartial decision-making, rather than benefiting specific political groups.
He added that delays in forming committees could prolong the process unnecessarily.
Marak further stated that the Governor has acknowledged the concerns raised and assured prompt action regarding the revision of electoral rolls.
He also indicated that a formal proposal seeking Governor’s rule would be submitted soon.
