Three NIT Silchar students drown at Dima Hasao Waterfall

Dima Hasao, Nov 8 : Three students of the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Silchar drowned on Saturday afternoon at Bulchol (Hmunthajao) Waterfalls near Bolsom Bagan under Harangajao in Assam’s Dima Hasao district.

According to the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), the incident occurred around 2 p.m. when a group of NIT students visited the scenic but remote waterfall site. The victims were identified as Sauhard Rai (20) and Sarvakritika (20), both from Uttar Pradesh, and Radhika (19) from Bihar.

Fire and Emergency Services teams from Haflong and Harangajao, along with police personnel from Harangajao Police Station and the DDMA, rushed to the spot soon after receiving information. An SDRF deep-diving team from Silchar was also deployed to assist in the rescue operation.

Authorities said rescue efforts were hampered due to poor mobile connectivity and lack of vehicular access in the hilly terrain. Despite challenges, all three bodies were retrieved and declared dead upon recovery.

A medical team was placed on standby, while district officials have urged the public to exercise caution while visiting waterfalls and other natural sites, especially during the post-monsoon season.
