In a First, Assam Book Fair 2023–24 Breaks New Ground in Silchar

Guwahati, Assam: In a first for the city, Silchar is gearing up to host the prestigious Assam Book Fair 2023–24 from December 1 to December 10, marking a new chapter in the state’s literary landscape.
Organized by the Publication Board of Assam in collaboration with the All Assam Publishers and Book Sellers Association, this event is set to transform the Police Parade Ground into a bustling hub of literary activity.

The annual Assam Book Fair, traditionally held in Guwahati, is expanding its horizons to smaller towns, starting with Silchar. As explained by Pramod Kalita, secretary of the Publication Board of Assam, this move is a strategic effort to rejuvenate the book industry, which has faced significant challenges in the post-COVID-19 era. The fair aims to offer solace to booksellers and publishers while catering to the region’s voracious appetite for book lovers.
The fair is set to commence with an inaugural session on December 1 at 3 pm, likely graced by Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma. The Minister of Education, Dr. Ranoj Pegu, will preside over the session.
The event promises to be a grand affair with the attendance of luminaries such as author-journalist Anuradha Sarma Pujari, novelist Tilottama Mazumdar from Kolkata and noted folk researcher Dr. Amalendu Bhattacharjee. Adding international flair, Selina Hossain, president of Bangla Academy Dhaka, will also be present.

The fair is a local affair and a national and international confluence, with booksellers and publishers from Assam, Tripura, West Bengal, and Bangladesh participating. It promises to be a treasure trove for book enthusiasts, offering various quality books across various genres and languages.
