RPF cracks down on ganja smuggling across NFR zone, 37 held in October

Contraband worth over Rs 9.4 crore seized; fresh recoveries made at New Coochbehar, Agartala, Dharmanagar, Lumding and Rangapara North

Maligaon (Guwahati), Nov 16 : The Railway Protection Force (RPF) of Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has intensified its crackdown on smuggling activities across its jurisdiction, apprehending 37 persons and recovering narcotics and other contraband valued at around Rs 9.40 crore during October 2025.

According to NFR, the seizures were made in multiple operations aimed at enhancing passenger safety and protecting railway property across the zone, which covers large parts of the Northeast.

In one of the latest actions, on 13 November 2025, RPF personnel at New Coochbehar recovered 37.1 kg of unclaimed ganja from the station premises.

The consignment, estimated to be worth Rs 3.71 lakh, was handed over to the Government Railway Police (GRP), New Coochbehar, for further legal action.

On the same day, joint teams of RPF and GRP at Agartala and Lumding carried out coordinated checks, leading to the recovery of 23.61 kg of ganja worth about Rs 2.36 lakh from railway premises at both locations.

The seized narcotics were subsequently handed over to the respective GRP officers-in-charge for necessary proceedings.

In another set of operations conducted on 12 November 2025, RPF teams from Dharmanagar, Agartala and Rangapara North recovered a total of 50.51 kg of ganja, valued at approximately Rs 5.05 lakh, from these stations.

These consignments were also transferred to the concerned GRP units for follow-up action under relevant legal provisions.

Northeast Frontier Railway said the recent recoveries underscore the effective coordination between the RPF, GRP and Customs authorities in tackling illegal activities on trains and within railway premises.

The zone has been witnessing sustained enforcement drives targeting narcotics smuggling and other forms of contraband movement using the railway network.

The NFR administration commended the “dedicated efforts” of RPF personnel across various posts and reiterated that similar checks and surveillance will continue to maintain safety and security for passengers and to deter misuse of railway infrastructure for unlawful activities.
