Rs 245-crore NFR facility set to handle over 25 freight rakes a month; Baihata to be first among six upcoming Gati Shakti cargo terminals in the state
Maligaon, Guwahati, Nov 27: Construction of six new Gati Shakti cargo terminals in Assam is progressing at a rapid pace, with the Baihata Gati Shakti Cargo Terminal in Kamrup (Rural) district nearing completion and expected to become operational shortly, the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has said.
The Baihata terminal, being developed by BR Transcon Ltd at an estimated cost of Rs 245 crore, is poised to significantly upgrade the freight logistics ecosystem in Assam and the wider Northeast by helping reduce logistics costs for industries.
While physical construction has been completed, NFR said necessary safety-related clearances are currently in progress before the facility is commissioned for operations.
Once operational, the Baihata Gati Shakti Cargo Terminal is expected to handle more than 25 freight rakes every month. The terminal has been equipped with three new goods lines, an electronic in-motion weighbridge, a durable circulating area with two goods platforms and high-mast lighting to support round-the-clock operations.
A dedicated ramp has also been provided for efficient handling of automobiles, enabling the terminal to cater to diverse cargo requirements.
The Gati Shakti Cargo Terminal policy, introduced in 2022 to promote modern logistics hubs developed in partnership with industry players, already has two such facilities in Assam — at Moinarband near Silchar and Cinnamara near Jorhat.
n February 25, 2025, Union Railways, Information & Broadcasting and Electronics & IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced six additional Gati Shakti cargo terminals for the state.
The six upcoming projects include the Gati Shakti Terminal at Habaipur in Lanka under Lumding Division, the Gati Shakti Terminal at Jogighopa, the Gati Shakti Terminal at Baihata, the Multi-Modal Logistics Terminal at Kendukona, the Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) terminal at Basugaon and the Gati Shakti Multi-Modal Cargo Terminal at Chayagaon, all under Rangiya Division.
Together, these facilities are expected to substantially strengthen Assam’s freight handling and multimodal connectivity.
Northeast Frontier Railway said the new terminals form part of a broader effort to expand and modernise freight infrastructure under the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan, aimed at improving connectivity, enhancing freight efficiency and meeting the rising logistics needs of the Northeast region.
