Arunachal Pradesh commemorates the iconic Battle of Walong with wreath laying, cultural events and veteran felicitation
Walong (Arunachal Pradesh), Nov 16: The Indian Army’s Spear Corps observed the 73rd Walong Day with a two-day commemoration on 15 and 16 November, honouring the extraordinary bravery of soldiers who fought in the Battle of Walong during the 1962 War. The event highlighted the historic stand taken by Indian troops in one of the conflict’s most fiercely contested engagements.

Lt Gen R C Tiwari, Eastern Army Commander, Lt Gen VMB Krishnan, Quarter Master General, Lt Gen Abhijit S Pendharkar, GOC Spear Corps, and Arunachal Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein attended the ceremony, along with 1962 War veterans and their families.
The Walong Day Eve observance on 15 November featured a Light and Sound Show, Drone Display, Sand Art installation and a series of cultural and musical performances. The presentations blended artistic expression with narratives of the courage displayed by Indian soldiers who defended the Walong sector against overwhelming odds.
The main ceremony on 16 November began with a solemn wreath-laying at the Walong War Memorial, followed by the unveiling of statues dedicated to the battle’s heroes. Cultural performances by local artists and the Indian Army added a traditional dimension to the proceedings. War veterans and participants in the commemorative events were also felicitated.
This year’s observance underscored the enduring legacy of the Battle of Walong and the strong civil–military bond in the region. The commemoration reaffirmed the spirit of sacrifice, resilience and patriotism associated with Walong, which continues to inspire generations across the Northeast and the nation.
