India’s ‘The Elephant Whisperers’ bags Oscar for Best Documentary Short Film

India has added another feather to its cap at the 95th Academy Awards, as the short documentary ‘The Elephant Whisperers’ won the Oscar for Best Documentary Short Film. This is the first time that an Indian film has won this category and the first time that an Indian film has won a competitive Oscar for directing and producing.

Elephant Whisperers

‘The Elephant Whisperers’ is a heartwarming and inspiring story of a couple in Tamil Nadu who adopt an orphaned baby elephant and form a deep bond with him. The film showcases the love, care, and compassion the couple shows toward the elephant and the challenges and joys of living with a wild animal. The film also highlights the importance of wildlife conservation and coexistence.

The film is directed by Kartiki Gonsalves and produced by Guneet Monga, both acclaimed filmmakers in India. Gonsalves is known for her documentaries on social and environmental issues, while Monga is known for her award-winning films like The Lunchbox, Masaan, and Period. End of Sentence.

The film beat out four other nominees: Stranger at the Gate, How do you Measure a Year?, The Last Days of War and The Water Protectors. The film received a standing ovation from the audience and the jury at the Oscars ceremony, where Gonsalves and Monga accepted the award.

In their acceptance speech, Gonsalves and Monga thanked the Academy, their team, their families, and their fans for their support. They also dedicated the award to the elephant and the couple who inspired them to make the film. They hoped their film would encourage people to respect and protect wildlife and nature.

The Oscar win for ‘The Elephant Whisperers’ is a historic achievement for Indian cinema, which has previously won only six Oscars in its history. The last Indian to win an Oscar was A.R. Rahman for his music in Slumdog Millionaire in 2009. The Oscar win for ‘The Elephant Whisperers’ is expected to boost the visibility and recognition of Indian documentaries worldwide.
