Army airlifts stranded civilians amid floods in Bhutan

New Delhi, Oct 5 : The Indian Army on Sunday conducted a daring rescue operation in Bhutan’s Phuentsholing area after unprecedented floods caused by incessant rainfall led to the swelling of the Torsa River, inundating vast areas across West Bengal and Bhutan.

Acting on an emergency request from Bhutanese authorities, the Army launched two helicopters from its Sevoke Road Aviation Base to evacuate stranded civilians from affected zones.

Despite marginal weather and low visibility, Army Aviation pilots carried out aerial reconnaissance before landing in difficult terrain to rescue people trapped by rising waters.

A senior Army official said, “The Indian Army remains ever ready to assist civil authorities in times of crisis. This operation reflects our deep commitment to humanitarian values and the enduring friendship between India and Bhutan.”

The successful mission underscored the Army’s commitment to humanitarian assistance and disaster relief operations, upholding its ethos of Service Before Self and further strengthening bilateral goodwill between India and Bhutan.
