Trump Called Katie Zacharia an Attorney. Her Law License Remains Unverified
Katie Zacharia Faces Questions Over Legal Credentials as White House Defends Her
President Donald Trump’s new press secretary, Katie Zacharia, is facing questions about her professional credentials after news organizations could not verify a U.S. law license supporting her public descriptions of herself as a lawyer. Zacharia told The New York Times that the confusion resulted from a misunderstanding.
The scrutiny intensified with a Wall Street Journal report that Zacharia took the California bar examination after graduating from law school in 2011 but did not pass. The newspaper attributed that information to a person with direct knowledge of the matter. Trump had described her as an attorney when announcing her appointment.

Her educational background is documented. Pepperdine University identifies Zacharia as a graduate of both its undergraduate program and its law school. The question surrounding her credentials concerns authorization to practice law, rather than whether she attended law school.
The distinction became a public issue as Zacharia began speaking for the administration. The New York Times said it could not locate a law license for her, despite her descriptions of herself as a lawyer and the president’s use of the term attorney. Its account included her response that the controversy arose from a misunderstanding.
Zacharia said helicopter noise caused her to mishear a question about bar admission as one about her whereabouts after law school.
The White House has defended her. In a statement provided to The Associated Press, Zacharia said she had worked in international transaction law with appropriate credentials. Communications director Steven Cheung also expressed confidence in her qualifications for the press secretary position.
The dispute has now prompted a formal complaint. Campaign for Accountability, a nonprofit watchdog, asked the State Bar of California on October 14 to investigate whether Zacharia’s public descriptions of herself as a lawyer violated state rules. The complaint seeks regulatory scrutiny; it does not establish that misconduct occurred.
California’s bar regulator told AP it had no record of Zacharia being licensed in the state under her married or maiden names. It declined to confirm whether it had received the complaint or opened an investigation, citing confidentiality requirements. Whether regulators will take action therefore remains unresolved.
