Guwahati’s Barnali Baruah Saikia is a gym trainer based in Bangalore
Guwahati, November 18, 2023: In a significant development, Barnali Saikia, an Assam-born boxer and Bangalore-based gym trainer has been safely rescued from captivity in Nigeria and returned to India. Presently, she is in medical observation in Mumbai.
This successful rescue operation brings a positive conclusion to a distressing incident that had raised concerns about the safety of Indian nationals abroad.
Barnali, who hails from Guwahati, had travelled to Nigeria on October 28 for a vacation. The trip took a harrowing turn when she was allegedly held against her will by an individual known as King, who forcibly took her visa and passport upon her arrival. This situation left Saikia stranded in Nigeria without any legal means of identification or escape.

The gravity of the situation came to light when Saikia managed to contact her family after days of anxious silence, informing them of her dire circumstances. Her family, deeply concerned, filed an FIR at the Dispur Police station and sought immediate help.
The concerted efforts of the Indian authorities, in collaboration with their Nigerian counterparts, led to the successful rescue of Saikia. Her safe return to India marks the end of a traumatic experience not only for her but also for her family and well-wishers.
