Guwahati (February 22, 2024): In an inspiring initiative to nurture environmental stewardship among citizens, the Airports Authority of India‘s Regional Sports Control Board for the North Eastern Region (RSCB-NER) has launched an innovative campaign against single-use plastic.

The campaign, titled the ‘All India AAI Relay Cycling Expedition‘, aims to disseminate the critical message of sustainability and environmental protection through the power of community and athleticism.

The expedition, which covers an impressive distance of 1600 kilometres, began on February 20, 2024, from the AAI RHQ-NER Community Hall near Guwahati Airport. The event kicked off with 12 enthusiastic cyclists, including four women and eight men, taking on the challenge to pedal against plastic pollution in the first leg of the journey.

Sanmukh Jugani, the Regional Executive Director of AAI’s NER, praised the initiative at the opening ceremony. He highlighted the multifaceted benefits of the campaign, emphasizing its role in promoting unity, health, and the beauty of North-East India’s diverse landscape. The cycling expedition is more than just a sporting event; it is a clarion call to society to reflect on the environmental consequences of single-use plastic and embrace sustainable alternatives.

The 20-day journey will see the participation of 60 cyclists in total, divided into five legs, with each team comprising 12 cyclists and two coordinating officers. The expedition is well-equipped with an ambulance and a pick-up truck for support, ensuring the safety and well-being of all participants.

The primary mission of this eco-friendly crusade is to elevate public awareness about the harmful effects of single-use plastic on our environment. By distributing jute bags in Assam, Nagaland, and Arunachal Pradesh and making stops at 18 strategic locations, the cyclists are not just spreading a message but also providing practical solutions to combat this pressing issue. The journey is slated to conclude in Guwahati on March 10, 2024, marking the end of a significant endeavour towards a greener, more sustainable future.

This event stands as a testament to the power of collective action and the importance of grassroots initiatives in driving meaningful change. The AAI’s RSCB-NER’s commitment to environmental conservation through this cycling expedition is a commendable step towards a plastic-free world and sets a precedent for similar initiatives globally.
