Hit By Rajdhani Express, Two Elephants Die Near Guwahati

Two elephants were killed after being hit by a train in Khetri of Assam’s Kamrup Metro district, a Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) spokesperson said.

The elephants collided sideways with the engine of Dibrugarh-bound Rajdhani Express at around 10 p.m. on Tuesday, the official said.

The accident occurred on the rails at Khetri’s Barahu railway station, around 44 kilometres from Guwahati.

The two elephants were said to have ventured out in search of food, the official said.

According to the preliminary report by the locomotive driver, the elephants collided sideways with the engine. The driver had reported the death of one elephant and injury to another. Later, it was informed that both died,” it added.

They came across railway tracks while hunting for food and were hit by the train. Forest officials, on the other hand, have arrived on the scene.

They notified the railway police, who conducted a post-mortem after which the two tuskers were buried at a prescribed location.

Locals have mentioned that a herd of elephants passes through the area on a regular basis in quest of food.
