Tendulkar’s Diwali Gift To Assam’s Hospital

The Makunda Christian Leprosy and General Hospital in Karimganj district has become a beneficiary of cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar.

The cricket icon, it was leant, has donated retinal cameras to the Paediatric Intensive care unit and neonatal intensive care unit at the hospital.

Critical patients from the neighbouring states of Tripura and Mizoram also come in this hospital for treatment.

It is through his foundation, Tendulkar donated retinal cameras which can help diagnose ‘retinopathy of prematurity’, a preventable complication among pre-term neonates (new-born) which can cause blindness.

This will benefit nearly 45 per cent pre-term deliveries and 50 per cent pre-term admissions in its NICU.

Presently, the nearest facility for ROP screening is available only in Guwahati, which is about 360 kilometres away from Karimganj.

Replying to a Tweeter user, Tendulakar Tweets: ‘Diwaliis the festival of lights & every kid should experience it. Hope this initiative will ensure that children have the gift of sight through the work you do at Makunda Hospital.
