Former Assam CM Tarun Gogoi Conferred Padma Bhushan Posthumously

Former Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has been conferred with the prestigious Padma Bhushan Award for distinguished service in Public Affairs, and is one of the sixteen posthumous awardees to receive the Padma Awards.

Dolly Gogoi, wife of Late Tarun Gogoi received the Award from the President of India.

The official Twitter handle of the President of India tweets, ‘President Kovindpresents Padma Bhushan to Shri Tarun Gogoi (Posthumous) for Public Affairs. A veteran political leader, he was the longest-serving Chief Minister of the Assam. He was credited with bringing peace to a state steeped in militant insurgency’.

The other 8 individuals from Assam to receive the Padma Shri are – Lakhimi Baruah, Birubala Rabha for Social Work, Gopiram Bargayn Burabhakat and Dulal Manki for Art, Mangal Singh Hazowary, Imran Shah for Literature and Education, Bijoya Chakravarty for Public Affairs and Roman Sarmah for Literature and Education-Journalism.

A total of 119 Padma awards were presented by President Ram Nath Kovind at the Rashtrapati Bhavan on Monday morning.

The list consists of seven Padma Vibhushan awards, 10 Padma Bhushan awards and 102 Padma Shri awards. 29 of the awardees are women, 16 are posthumous awardees while one of the recipients is a transgender awardee.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar were among those present at the function.
