Centre Cuts Excise Duties On Petrol, Diesel By Rs. 5 and Rs. 10, Assam CM Announces VAT Cut

The Narendra Modi government has finally slashed excise duties on petrol by Rs 5 a litre and on diesel by Rs 10 a litre as a Diwali gift to the nation.

The Modi government, which has been battling criticism over reforms in farm laws, said the excise duty cut in diesel was twice that on petrol.

“The Indian farmers have, through their hard work, kept the economic growth momentum going even during the lockdown phase and the massive reduction in excise on diesel will come as a boost to the farmers during the upcoming rabi season,” said a government notification on Wednesday night.

The notification urged the states to reduce the value added tax (VAT) on petrol and diesel to provide relief to consumers.

Accepting the request by PM, Assam’s chief minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma immediately announced a reduction of VAT on Petrol & Diesel each by Rs 7.00.

He tweets, ‘Heartening to learn Central Govt decision to reduce excise duty on petrol and diesel. In consonance with the decision of Honble PM, I am pleased to announce that Assam Govt will also reduce VAT on petrol and diesel each by Rs 7/- with immediate effect.’
