Gandhi Shilp Bazaar opens in Itanagar, showcases Northeast crafts

ITANAGAR, Oct 24: A ten-day exhibition of Northeast India’s handloom and handicraft products opened at Mopin Solung Ground here on Saturday, providing artisans and weavers a platform to reach consumers and potential buyers.

Gandhi Shilp Bazaar 2026, which will continue until November 2, is being organized by the North Eastern Handicrafts and Handlooms Development Corporation Ltd. (NEHHDC) in association with the Office of the Development Commissioner (Handicrafts), Union Ministry of Textiles.

According to the organizers, 56 stalls have been listed for the Itanagar edition, showcasing traditional textiles, handwoven products and indigenous crafts from across the region.

The inauguration was attended by NEHHDC Managing Director Mara Kocho, Hara Kanta Baro, regional director for the northeastern region in the Office of the Development Commissioner (Handicrafts), and the senior assistant director of the Handicrafts Service Centre, Itanagar.

The exhibition aims to expand market access for artisans and craftspersons while drawing attention to the traditional skills that support livelihoods across the Northeast.

Visitors can view and purchase handmade products and interact directly with their makers. Organizers said the platform would help participating artisans gain visibility beyond their local markets and explore opportunities to expand their businesses.

The bazaar also seeks to promote awareness of the cultural knowledge, techniques and artistic traditions associated with the region’s crafts. Organizers said stronger market opportunities could help sustain traditional practices and encourage artisans to pass their skills on to future generations.
