Three female elephants, aged 12, 18 and 25 were run over by a train while they were crossing a railway track near Ettimadai on the outskirts of the Coimbatore city, Tamilnadu, on Friday night, police said.
Two calves were among the three female elephants killed by the train coming from Kerala, they said.

One elephant was found on the track, while two others were found lying apart from the track.
The loco pilot of Mangalore-Chennai Express stopped the train and informed Railways to alert the Forest Department.
The train full of passengers was stopped for a few hours at Walayar and later it was resumed.
