Her husband Trilok Dharmik, a railway worker, said Geeta remained in home quarantine and gave her a sample for an RT-PCR test. However, her oxygen levels dropped on May 1, and she also developed a fever and had to be rushed to Dahod Railway Hospital. “Later, her tests also confirmed a Covid infection,” Trilok said.

Geeta recovered for about three days, but her condition deteriorated on May 5 and she was admitted to a private hospital in Vadodara on May 7, where she was held until May 23, only needed oxygen therapy and all other treatments were done,” said Trilok.

Geeta was taken back to the railway hospital in Dahod. Here she was kept on a ventilator for two months and then another month on a BiPAP machine.

Even after that, she remained on high oxygen demand. Trilok said that about a month ago, Geeta’s oxygen demand had dropped significantly and she only needed 1 to 1.5 kg of oxygen.

“She regained her health as it was before the infection. The doctors decided to discharge her on Friday,” he said.

Geeta still needs oxygen support but can stay away from it for 10 to 15 minutes. “We can manage with an oxygen concentrator now.

A gas cylinder has been kept as a spare in our home,” Trilok said, adding that her lungs had not fully recovered and that over time she may not need oxygen support at all.
